STL format
The STL format stores 3D models as simple triangles without additional features such as color or texture.
It is particularly popular in 3D printing because it provides direct geometry storage that is easily understood by printers.
An STL file is usually small in size and easy to manipulate, making it ideal for sharing and using 3D printing.
STL does not support complex geometric structures such as curved surfaces or rich texture descriptions as the mesh format can.
Mesh format
The mesh format stores three-dimensional models in the form of meshes (triangles) that form the geometry of the object's surface.
A mesh image can contain many types of information, such as color, texture, and material.
It has generally been used more versatilely in various applications such as 3D printing, game development, virtual reality and medical imaging.
The mesh format provides a more detailed description of the object's geometry and associated properties.
Solid format
Solid models are created with 3D design tools and software. These represent objects/parts composed of mass and volume, allowing for more accurate modeling and simulation in many applications.
Solid models contain the entire volume of an object, which allows them to be used to calculate an object's mass, density, and other physical properties.
They describe the internal structure of the object, such as cavities, holes and other features that are not visible from the surface.
Solid models provide more accurate geometry than mesh or STL models, making them useful for accurate designs and simulations.
